“ The laughs began within seconds of the show starting and didn’t stop until the end of this crazy Canadian puppet show.
Mr Bunk the silent clown loves to play. With found objects, light, sound effects and some obliging audience members he creates amazingly detailed shadow puppet antics that reveal an offbeat imagination let loose. There’s a kooky sensibility to this show that is irresistible – intriguing antics with masking tape, a balloon and a woman’s wig make way for an unconventional haircut, a game of chess and an hysterical, interactive ninja battle.
All the action is projected onto a large screen, but it’s hard to decide where to look as Mr Bunk’s physical theatre is just as engaging as the images he produces. Watching him get it all together is as much fun as the final effect.
The handmade style of this production is charming. Props are displayed on a washing line, and are the sorts of things you might easily find around the house or at the local op shop. Many are adapted or created on the spot, with deft use of cardboard, tape and scissors. Years of study in puppetry, clowning and mime (along with a comprehensive international touring schedule) contribute to a truly captivating performance.
The audience participation bits are of the gentle, not embarrassing variety, and the final sequence (a jolly twist on horse racing) ends the piece on a warm, fuzzy, smiley note. Take the whole family to see Sticks Stones Broken Bones, then go home and get out the craft box and remember, there’s always time to play. “
